Late breaking NEWS about the election November 2, 1999

Dated: November 2, 1999: 12:00 pm

Opinion, observation, and information: Scott Webster of WebstersWebsites

  • Item: If you have received a copy or forwarded email that was just posted on the Highland Chain without my permission, regarding a private email exchange between me and a Cold Spring resident, that was posted by Steve Rosario Monday Nov 1, 7:59 am, here is my Sunday REPLY which was "conveniently" omitted. I just found about it this Monday evening at 10:30 pm. Since this is being used for campaign leverage in a most derogatory manner it cannot be ignored. This kind of dirty politics must be stopped and dealt with no matter which side condones or promotes it.
  • Item: Perhaps you saw the results of the "midnight ride" of the brave soul who posted hundreds of 8 1/2 x 11 inch "posters" around the Town saying "VOTE DEMOCRATIC" at the bottom with a picture of Petrocelli with a circle and a strike through it. I am told that a license number registered to a car agency in Fishkill was involved. Brave souls indeed! Perhaps it was the same person(s) who stole Tamanga signs in a prior election (see below).
  • Item: I received a letter from Lou Petrocelli, dated October 29, apparently sent to many voters regarding the "attack" ad in the PCNR apparently paid for by Harold "Pops" Lyons. Since the ad was in the last issue of the paper before the election and thus preventing a timely response, I belileve the internet can serve a valuable service to the voters concerning only response to charges, direct or indirect by any party. So below, in part, is what I received:

"We have run a clean, honest and above-board campaign as promised at the beginning. Regrettably, we can't say the same about our Democrat opposition even though they also promised publicly in the Putnam County News. Broken promises...

    • 5 Philipstown businesses were threatened with boycotts or damage to their businesses when they displayed one of our candidate's signs.
    • One Cold Spring business was threatened with no fire protection if one of our candidate's signs stayed in the window of the business.
    • Many of our road signs have been torn down or mutilated.
    • The ad run in the last issue of The Putnam County News accusing me as Superviso Candidate of unlawfully cutting down trees is not accurate. I was legally absolved of this accusation years ago.

These are blatant betrayals of promises made by our opposition."

I would also like to point out that the full page AD as printed was from 1989, ten years ago, and had it not involved NYC property whould have made no news at all. And guess what...within the last year or so, New York City itself went and cut down the same kind of trees over its very own aqueduct where it corsses Fishkill Road and route 301!!! (see pictures below).

Regarding the above Petrocelli accusation about the mutilating of Republican campaign signs, this seems to be a replay of the theft of Republican candidate for County Leglislature, Vinny Tamagna's signs by the wife of his opponent and a friend who were caught and arrested with the signs in their automobile. As I remember, and I will check this out shortly, both arrestees were directly involved with the Philipstown Democratic Committee.

See Election Results for the evening of November 2.
The trees were recently removed in a highly visable area without rhyme or reason by NYC over their own aqueduct. This practice has been done under power lines and all over. Talk about the environment. On the left is the upper side looking south from 301. the right is looking east from Fishkill Road. A picture's worth 1000 words. Below is looking from Fishkill across 301 up the hill (south).
