In Philipstown, cooperation between the Town Board and our
citizens has brought dreams to reality.
In just the last two
years:
E-911: People have given great names to their own private roads
so that the Town Board could complete the E-911 project. Now,
wherever your home is, if you are in need of volunteer or professional
emergency services, they can find you.
PHILIPSTOWN PARK: Citizens have
volunteered their professional skills to produce the elegant gates and
the Trail of Trees at the new Philipstown Park on 9D and design the new
seating and coffee bar at the Depot Theater. Speaking of real pros,
those who direct and act in adult productions there do it for love, not
money.
MOUNTAIN DRIVE: For years, people living in Continental Village
had worked to turn Mountain Drive into a paved and drained part of the
Philipstown road system. Now it is. (And, incidentally, thanks to the
Town Board's response to citizen complaints, the paving has been
removed from that potholed section of Old Albany Post Road.)
TIMBER LAW: Almost a century ago, the Highlands were denuded of trees to stoke
the Foundry fires. Over the years, nature has restored the trees. Now
the Town Board has protected them by enacting a timber harvesting law,
drafted by a Board-appointed local council, so that property owners can
harvest trees while insuring plentiful stands for our descendants.
CELL TOWER LAW: When Washington, D.C. dumped decisions about cell-tower
location onto local governments, it was our citizens who caught on to the
problem first. The result? The Town has been able to mandate far
fewer towers that still do the whole job and some imaginative attempts
at disguise.
