HUDSON HIGHLANDS PLACES TO SEE

Breakneck Mountain

View of Breakneck Mountain as seen from Route 218 on Storm King Mountain. The afternoon shadows highlight the quarried section of the mountain where much of the granite was removed for the Brooklyn Bridge circa 1883, the Statue of Liberty and other projects. Notice the Breakneck Lodge in the lower center on Route 9d.

Views of the mountain from the Metro North tracks (l) and Breakneck Lodge (r) show how rugged this area is and why it is so popular with hikers.

The Breakneck automobile tunnel looking south (l), with a hiking trail beginning at the lower right. Also looking south from within the railroad tunnel (r) which originally carried auto traffic and trains until around 1920.
