Pictures of the fire on Crow's Nest Mountain:

The day it started and where. This small fire just above Route 218, which runs from West Point to Cornwall, might have been stopped by diverting several loads of water from the helicopters which were then operating on the Bear Mountain fire 4 miles south of Cold Spring. This picture was taken about 45 minutes from first alarms.


After the fire: The brown areas show extensive damage to the larger trees. Many of these trees are dead due to the heat that extended up to two feet below the surface, killing the fine feed roots and boiling the sap and destroying the bark.
